Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Denver Health! Volunteers are an integral part of our team and share our commitment to providing exceptional experiences to patients, families, and our community.

Denver Health has a variety of ongoing volunteer opportunities that play an important role in providing comfort, empathy, and care to brighten a patient's hospital stay or clinic visit.

 

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities:

Most volunteer roles, with the exception of our specialty programs, like Pet Therapy, start in our Pathfinder Program.

Pathfinders are the face of Denver Health! They serve a critical role in the hospital from helping patients and visitors find their way to appointments to bringing much needed comfort items to patient rooms. The Pathfinder role allows new volunteers to get comfortable with the hospital campus and become familiar with the various departments and additional volunteer roles available all while providing a vital service to our visitors.

While many volunteers choose to stay in the Pathfinder role, after 32 hours of volunteer service, a Pathfinder is able to be matched with a different department.

 

Some available roles are:

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is a busy, fast-paced environment. Volunteers support patients need by providing comfort items, run errands and stock rooms in our Level 1 Trauma Center. Volunteers in this department must be over 18 years old.

Surgical Departments and Intensive Care Units

The Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the Medical Intensive Care Unit offer roles to stock rooms, deliver labs, meet patient needs and help support staff.

Pediatric Departments

Help our Child Life Specialists in the Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Unit or Neonatal Unit with our littlest patients. This role includes hosting activities, helping with events, and reading to our pediatric patients. We are not currently accepting applications for the NICU, Mom/Baby Unit or Cuddle Program. Cancer Center

The Cancer Center has roles for grant clinic assistants, comfort care providers, and Reiki providers. Reiki practitioners are considered a specialty role and have additional requirements.

Cozy Cart

This volunteer role tours the hospital visiting patient rooms in a variety of departments with our Cozy Cart to offer books, magazines, puzzles, blankets and other items that help our patients feel a little more comfortable during their stay at Denver Health.

Ongoing Specialty Roles:

Some ongoing volunteer roles require additional training or specialization before application.

Pet Therapy

Our certified Pet Therapy teams provide comfort and companionship for patients in our inpatient centers. To find out more, click here.

 

Reiki Practitioners

Our Reiki Practitioner volunteers work in our Palliative Care Clinic and Cancer Center to provide reiki sessions to our patients. Reiki volunteers must be certified in Traditional Usui Reiki or equivalent with level I, II, or Master level.

 

Yoga Practitioners

Our Yoga Practitioner volunteers provide yoga sessions/classes in various units throughout the hospital for both staff and patients. Yoga volunteers must be certified yoga teachers, provide certificates, and liability insurance documentation.

 

Reproductive Choice Specialists

Our Reproductive Choice Specialists provide assistance in our Gynecology Specialty Care Clinic and require specialized doula certification. For more information, contact dhdoulaprogram@gmail.com

 

Reach Out And Read

Reach Out and Read gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Children of all ages, birth to 18, can take home a new or gently used book every time they visit our clinics or hospital. This program has several volunteer opportunities and is currently in need of volunteers for a weekly role to assist with sorting book donations to distribute to our pediatric and adolescent clinics. Because this role does not directly interact with patients, volunteers in this position do not need to serve as Pathfinders.

Short-Term Volunteer Opportunities:

If you aren’t available for one of our ongoing volunteer opportunities, Denver Health offers several short-term or one-time opportunities for individuals, families or groups.

Our short-term volunteer opportunities do not involve any direct contact with patients and do not require the same onboarding procedures as our ongoing volunteer roles.

 

Newborns In Need

One third of all babies born in Denver are born at Denver Health and nearly 90% of those children come from families who struggle to get by. With the help of donations from our community, every child in need born at Denver Health is sent home with a bag of some of the essential items for their first few days of life, like diapers, blankets, and clothes. Our volunteers pack hundreds of bags each week to be shared with those families. Most packing sessions last 2 hours and can be scheduled with your friends, family, or small group.
