Syphilis Is Up!
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) spread by direct contact during vaginal, anal or oral sex. If left untreated, it can cause brain, nerve and tissue damage, and death.
Anyone can get syphilis, but in Denver it most common among gay men and men who are having sex with men. Here are some quick facts about syphilis in our community.
- Since 2007, early syphilis cases have increased by 340% in Colorado.
- In the last year alone (Oct. 2011 – 2012), early (infectious) cases of syphilis increased 57%.
- Approximately 90% of all new early syphilis cases are in men who have sex with other men.
- Most infections have occurred in men who have sex with men and are living with HIV, which makes it very important to be screened for other STDs, including syphilis, every six months.
