Orthopedic Research Team

  • Cyril Mauffrey, MD, FRCS, is the Director of Orthopedic Research, is an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon, and an Associate Professor. Dr. Mauffrey attended medical school at the University of Turin, performed an internship at the University of Marseille, and performed Basic Surgical Training and Higher Surgical Training in Orthopedics Fellowships in the UK. He also completed and Orthopedic Trauma specialization Fellowship at University Hospital, Louisville, KY. Dr. Mauffrey feels that running clinical trials is the most challenging yet most rewarding aspect of research when results are meaningful and directly apply to the patients of Denver Health.
  • Douglas R. Gibula, BS, CCRC, RPT, is the Orthopedic Research Projects Coordinator. He is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and has worked in clinical research for 9 years. Mr. Gibula completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO and is a graduate student at the CO Clinical & Translational Science Institute, University of CO. Mr. Gibula is an avid skateboarder, runner, cyclist, and mountain enthusiast.
  • Hannah Gissel, BA, is an Orthopedic Research Assistant. Ms. Gissel is from Eugene, OR (Go Ducks!) and moved to CO for school in 2008 (Go Buffs!). Ms. Gissel graduated from CU Boulder with degrees in Integrative Physiology and Spanish. Her research background is in Molecular and Behavioral Genetics, but she decided to pursue her interests in Orthopedics and working with underserved populations at Denver Health in 2012. Ms. Gissel hopes to begin medical school in Fall 2014.
  • Corey Henderson, MS, is an Orthopedic Research Assistant. Originally from Chico, CA, she moved to CO in 2011 to attend graduate school.  Ms. Henderson holds a BA degree in Communication from San Diego State University, a BS degree in Microbiology from Chico State, and a MS degree in Biomedical Sciences from Regis University.  She completed a clinical research internship in the Emergency Department at Denver Health during graduate school, and subsequently decided to pursue Orthopedic Research with Denver Health in 2012. Ms. Henderson will pursue a career in medicine in 2014.
  • Jiandong Hao, MD, PhD, is an Orthopedic Research Fellow. Dr. Hao received his MD in 1994 from Hebei Medical University and PhD in 2000 from Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science & Technology, China.  He performed a post-Doctoral research Fellowship in neuroscience at Mount Sinai Medical Center of NY, as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Hao completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University, China.

  • Benoit Herbert, MD, is an Orthopedic Research Fellow. Dr. Herbert attended medical school in Paris, France. After a residency in Medicine, he decided to pursue a surgical career in Orthopedics and started his training as a Resident in Paris. With a passion for trauma, he seized the opportunity to do a research Fellowship in Denver and learn from Dr. Mauffrey. Dr. Herbert hopes to start a Residency in the United States and match in 2014.“Working here as a Research Fellow brings me only satisfaction.   • Derly Cuellar, MD, is an Orthopedic Research Fellow. Dr. Cuellar grew up in the south TX border town of Laredo. He attended the University of Texas at San Antonio and graduated with a BS in Biology in 2007 and in 2012 he attained his MD degree from the University of TX Medical School at Houston. He then completed a Surgery Internship at the University of CO in 2013.  Dr. Cuellar is fascinated with Orthopedics and passionate about advancing Orthopedic practice through clinical research.“My experiences here at Denver Health have been phenomenal, in both a clinical and research aspect.   • Ji Wan Kim, MD, is a visiting Orthopedic Research Fellow from Korea. He is a fully trained Orthopaedic trauma surgeon who started with us on October 1st 2014 completing our team of 4 international research fellows.
