Jennifer L. Gaudiani, MD, CEDS

In 2008, Dr. Gaudiani helped start the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders and position it as the nation’s top medical stabilization center for adults with eating disorders too medically compromised to receive care in a mental health setting.

Testimonial from Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, Former Medical Director of ACUTE

ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders, without a question, provides the best multidisciplinary medical stabilization in the United States for adults with eating disorders. The physicians are hand-picked for their warm, compassionate, competent, and highly dedicated natures. They deeply care about each patient and family as an individual, spending lots of time at the bedside getting to know the whole person, while also participating in key clinical research and constantly working to improve care through quality improvement initiatives. The psychologists are remarkable, connecting with patients 1:1 and meeting them where they are, very warmly establishing bonds that allow patients to discover and refresh their awareness of their top values, to help motivate them through the darker moments of recovery. The dietitians are the absolute best in the country for nutritional rehabilitation of critically ill patients. They too meet 1:1 with every patient, establishing a personal relationship and working with the patients to help establish a new, healthier relationship with food. The physical and occupational therapists are doing absolutely ground-breaking work with patients from the time of admission, recognizing that bedrest is the last thing most of our patients need: rather, they need to be carefully and expertly reunited with their bodies, strengthened and supported in regaining independence and a sense of healthy physicality. And the nurses and CNAs are so supportive and aware of how hard eating disorders can be, ready at any hour to comfort and reassure. I'm in a great position to speak about ACUTE's wonderfulness, because I got to help lead it for almost eight years. Now that I'm in private practice in the outpatient setting, I will be sending any patient of mine who requires medical stabilization to ACUTE. The intake staff are incredibly responsive and warm, helping guide patients and families through this bewildering and stressful time with a sure hand. Where the average (top) hospital has good intentions, invariably it lacks this complete eating disorder specialist team that has been assembled and worked together for so many years, each member of which is vital to the holistic approach that makes ACUTE successful in providing definitive medical stabilization to the remarkable patients who admit. I cannot recommend ACUTE highly enough!

Patient Testimonials

Family Testimonials

The ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders saves the lives of severe eating disorder patients, and their loved ones are often the most vocal and most grateful.

Words cannot express our gratitude.

Our daughter was close to dying of severe malnutrition when we brought her to Denver Health last year. She had steadfastly refused inpatient treatment prior to that and, as parents, it was terrifying to watch her rapid decline. On admission, she had a heart rate of 27 beats a minute and a blood sugar level that had her at the brink of slipping into a coma.

From the moment we entered the ACUTE center, a calm and competent team of professionals took charge. Over the subsequent weeks as they nursed her back to health, the importance of a cutting edge medical team was brought home to us on several occasions. An eating disorder can be fatal and needs specialized expertise to keep the patient safe through the risk-fraught process of refeeding. The ACUTE team was diligently on top of our daughter's medical status and kept us updated on an ongoing basis. This was very reassuring to us as parents and greatly helped to relieve our anxiety at our daughter's critical state.

The true value of treatment at the ACUTE center however goes well beyond medical expertise and outstanding nursing care. Every single team member was caring, compassionate and spent countless hours with our daughter encouraging and supporting her. Her treatment program was individualized and structured around her special needs. Our daughter has been to several top-rated treatment centers in the country and we have never seen this customized level of care, tailored to the patient's needs instead of a one-size-fits-all schedule that is the norm. Throughout this period, our daughter received daily therapeutic and psychiatric support, thereby ensuring that she would have a smooth transition to the residential level of care.

Words cannot express our gratitude to the Denver Health team for saving our daughter's life. For every parent or family member looking to help a loved one, this is THE place for building a strong foundation for sustained recovery from an eating disorder.
