Kidney Stone Treatment at Denver Health

Kidney stones grow on a kidney as a result of an accumulation of minerals and salts over time. Kidney stones may be as small as a grain of sand and sometimes as large as a golf ball. Symptoms of kidney stones include:

  • Back or side pain, and/or
  • blood in the urine.

If you suspect you have a kidney stone, see your primary care provider who can best diagnose this condition. If you don’t have a kidney stone, but are concerned that your risk factors may be high, your provider can offer advice on how to reduce your chances of developing a kidney stone.

Why Choose Denver Health for Kidney Stone Treatment?

If you have been diagnosed with a kidney stone, Denver Health can help. If surgery is required to remove the stone(s), Dr. Wilson Molina, board-certified urologist, utilizes Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). MIS for kidney stones removal includes a small incision through the muscle that enables Dr. Molina to effectively treat the kidney stone. Because muscle needs a considerable amount of time to completely heal, the small incisions made by MIS lends itself to less pain, little trauma to the muscle, and a faster recovery.

"My focus on treating patients with complex kidney stone disease and our expertise in performing minimally invasive surgery allows Denver Health patients who come to us with a variety of urological problems to experience shorter recovery times,” says Dr. Molina.

Kidney Stone Clinic for Prevention & Management at Denver Health

In June 2012, Denver Health introduced the first clinic in Colorado focusing on preventing kidney stones and managing other illnesses and side effects associated with kidney stone disease. In our kidney stone clinic, we discuss the patient’s metabolism (how your body gets the energy it needs), learning the best foods to eat, and how to best manage any illness related to kidney stones. We see all patients with a history of kidney stone disease. We also participate in clinical trials to provide patients new ways to treat kidney stones.

The Kidney Stone Clinic for Prevention & Management is located on the 3rd floor of the Davis Building on Denver Health’s main campus. The clinic is held on every first and third Tuesday afternoon. We accept most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. Please call 303-436-4949 to make an appointment; a referral is required.
