Welcome to Denver

On behalf of everyone at Denver Health, I want to welcome you to our wonderful city.  Denver is a vibrant and diverse city, and we hope you will enjoy a pleasant and healthy visit.

Dr. Gabow prefers.jpgDenver Health serves as the Mile High City's public safety net health system.  It includes an acute care hospital, extensive primary and urgent care services, the Rocky Mountain Regional Trauma Center, the 911 emergency response system, the Public Health Department, the Rocky Mountain Regional Poison and Drug Center, eight family health centers, 12 School-based Health Centers, a NurseLine, and the Rocky Mountain Center for Medical Response to Terrorism, Mass Casualties, and Epidemics.

An integrated system that is widely known as a model for the nation, Denver Health serves as the key provider for uninsured and Medicaid patients.  While steadfastly maintaining the mission to care for underserved populations for nearly 150 years, Denver Health has evolved into a highly innovative organization that utilizes sophisticated information technology and offers high quality care provided in modern new facilities.

DNC Spotlight

CEO participates in Roundtable

Denver Health CEO Patricia Gabow, M.D., was one of 16 national health care experts gathered to discuss how the next president could reform health care.  Health care reform is on the list of priorities for the Democratic National Convention.

Other participants included, among others, the mayors of Boston and San Francisco, CEO of the Mayo Clinic and executives from Amgen, Pfizer and Safeway. More than 900 people attended the event at Boettcher Concert Hall.

The Roundtables are a series of 10 issue-oriented, nonpartistan roundtables sponsored by the Denver 2008 Convention Executive Committee.

The health care group focused on how the system in America could promote wellness to prevent chronic diseases that impact the cost of health care.

Dr. Gabow spoke about the fragmented nature of American health care, noting that there really isn't a "system."  She said an integrated, comprehensive, coordinated system with a clear floor and clear ceiling is needed.

The problem in health care is that there are a lot of people, at every level, making a lot of money maintaining this non-system, she noted, and said the new administration would have to have a great deal of courage in studying health care programs to solve the problems in U.S. health care.

Mile High health tips
Denver's mile high altitude may cause visitors to pay closer attention to their health while in town for on vacation.  Denver Public Health offers the following suggestions:

Be safe in the shade
Seek shade, especially in the midday hours when UV rays are strongest.  Cover up with clothing to protect exposed skin.  Use sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher.

Stay hydrated
Drink water, adults should drink about two liters (8, 8-ounce glasses) of water each day to stay hydrated.  Avoid beverages with alcohol and drinks high in sugar since they don't fight dehydration and make symptoms worse. Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages when you feel thirsty.
