Denver Health has recently opened a new Flow Cytometry Laboratory dedicated to research on inflammation in severely injured patients. Our flow cytometer, donated to Denver Health by the family and friends of a grateful patient, analyzes multiple features of individual cells as they flow through a fluid medium. It is currently being used to study changes in the surface antigens on white blood cells following traumatic injury.

What is Flow Cytometry used for?
Flow Cytometry, or so-called FACS-Analyses, is one of the most evolving technologies in micro- and molecular biological analyses. Its unique properties allow the measurement of several characteristics (relative size, granularity, and up to five colors of emitted fluorescence) in parallel and correlated particle by particle. Various uses of flow cytometry include measurements of auto-fluorescent proteins, antigen or ligand density, apoptosis, enzyme activity, DNA and RNA content, membrane potential, cytokine receptors and synthesis, drug uptake and efflux, proliferation, phagocytosis, and viability of whole cells, isolated nuclei, organelles or microorganisms. Changes in cell cycle, intracellular pH, intracellular calcium, intracellular glutathione and oxidative burst can be also detected with these instruments.
