Family Planning Services for Women

A variety of birth control options are available through the STD and Family Planning Clinic.

Contraceptive options available for women include:

  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Hormonal patch
  • Hormonal vaginal ring
  • Progestin—only injectable
  • Long-acting methods of contraception, including hormonal and non-hormonal copper intrauterine device (IUD) and the progestin-only implant

You can discuss the pros/cons of all the birth control methods with your provider to determine the best method for you. At a minimum, all women are eligible for a three-month supply of birth control with referral to primary care for ongoing services. We also offer referrals for sterilization (vasectomy, Essure, and bilateral tubal ligation).

Family Planning Services for Men

Men attending the STD and Family Planning Clinic are provided family planning counseling with emphasis on the role, responsibility, and importance of effective communication with their partners surrounding the contraceptive decision-making process. If a couple is trying to conceive, we also offer information on how to have a healthy pregnancy.

Family planning services for men include:

  • Involve men in pregnancy planning and prevention
  • Provide accurate information on available methods, benefits of spacing children and pregnancy/delivery
  • Preconception counseling
  • Contraception: offer condoms; female-directed methods discussed
  • Emergency contraception
  • Referrals for vasectomies

The STD and Family Planning Clinic also provides free emergency contraception (or EC). EC may be used to help prevent pregnancy after having sex without using birth control. EC must be taken within five days after unprotected intercourse. EC is most effective when taken as soon as possible after having sex.
