We work from a client-centered approach and treat patients with respect and unconditional positive regard. We help them to have the capacity to find their own answers and move toward growth and healing. In addition, each of our clinicians specializes in one of the following therapeutic frameworks or interventions:

  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT): We work with the patient to accept what is out of their personal control, while committing to action that will improve their quality of life. This is done through teaching the patient psychological skills: being present, defusing from thinking, accepting uncomfortable feelings, being aware, defining values and committing to action to deal with their painful thoughts and feelings effectively. This enables patients to live consciously, be resilient to pain and discomfort and create a meaningful and satisfying life.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): We work with the patient to overcome their difficulties (addiction and otherwise) by changing their thinking, behavior and emotional responses. We help the patient become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so they can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.
  • Dual Diagnosis: We provide a supportive approach to therapy that reinforces self-esteem and builds self-confidence by addressing mental health and substance use on a continuum. Mental health diagnoses are not ignored but further explored in their relationship to the patient’s substance use. Referrals for further mental health treatment are made as appropriate and collaboration with other professionals is maintained.
  • Mindfulness: We work with patients to help them learn to purposely pay attention to the present moment so they are aware of thoughts, feelings and emotions as they occur without being carried away by them. There is increasing evidence on the efficacy of mindfulness in alleviating mental and physical health problems and promoting overall well-being. By practicing mindfulness and living more fully in the moment, anxiety about the uncertainty of the future and helplessness over the past is diminished.

Patients are offered individual therapy as frequently as weekly. It is also an option for them to include family members who need to better understand substance use and the treatment process in sessions with them. Patients also meet with their doctor as frequently as weekly for medication management for both substance use and mental health issues if appropriate. Lastly patients are able to engage in outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) groups. Outpatient groups include: CBT, Dual Diagnosis, Seeking Safety, DBT, Grief and Loss, Relapse Prevention, Art Therapy and Peer Recovery.

Also, the Denver Health Addiction Recovery Center has an IOP for patients who have not been successful with Level I treatment. In this program, treatment includes substance use education, relapse prevention, and groups designed to improve coping and life skills. Patients also may receive psychiatric evaluation for medications. Urinalysis may be required.
