Lactation Support

Mom breastfeeding babyFor women who plan to breastfeed their newborns, Denver Health has International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and certified lactation counselors that are committed to helping a mother achieve the best breastfeeding experience for her and her baby.

We offer classes to help moms prepare for breastfeeding prior to delivery. We offer lactation support in the hospital to help mom and baby shortly after birth. In addition, breastfeeding support and education are available through the Denver Health Women Infants and Children (WIC) clinics located at Westside Family Health CenterEastside Family Health Center and Montbello Family Health Center.

Colorado Can Do 5! BEST Award

In 2011, Denver Health received a Breastfeeding Excellence Starts Today (BEST) award from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Colorado Breastfeeding Coalition. This award demonstrates that Denver Health has implemented the Colorado's Can Do 5! hospital initiative which includes the following five breastfeeding practices to support mothers:

  • The infant is breastfed in the first hour after birth.
  • The infant is fed only breast milk in the hospital.
  • The infant stays in the same room with the mother in the hospital.
  • The infant does not use a pacifier in the hospital.
  • Hospital gives the mother a telephone number to call for help with breastfeeding after discharged from the hospital.

Postpartum Breastfeeding Support and Classes

While mom and baby are still at Denver Health recovering from the delivery, a lactation support specialist will visit to help mom and baby get a good start to breastfeeding.

We know that breastfeeding can sometimes be challenging and that new moms need support from family and the community. That is why we offer postpartum breastfeeding classes and encourage new mothers, partners and family members to come to learn and practice breastfeeding skills for moms with babies 1-4 months old.
