The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients from the Denver metropolitan area, and serves as a referral resource for patients from throughout the State of Colorado and neighboring regions. Clinical services focus on diagnosis and treatment of both complex and common respiratory problems as well as management of critically ill, hospitalized patients. Care is provided in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

The Division’s mission is the advancement and dissemination of the science of respiratory disease and critical illness through the delivery of clinical care, education and research.

Medical Intensive Care Unit

The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is a state-of-the-art 24-bed unit with an 8-bed Step-down Unit with the Surgical Critical Care service.

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory Therapy provides services to all areas of Denver Health Medical Center. As part of a diverse multidisciplinary team, respiratory therapists help manage 15 to 20 mechanically-ventilated patients each day. Respiratory therapists provide education for patients with respiratory problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and obstructive sleep apnea in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. They also support the Bronchoscopy Service, and provide oxygen therapy, aerosolized medication, non-invasive ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure, and broncho-pulmonary hygiene. The therapists work closely with the Pulmonary/Critical Care team, Surgery and other disciplines at Denver Health to improve the lung health of patients.

Pulmonary Function Lab

Pulmonary function tests are performed with both a state-of-the-art body plethysmograph and a traditional spirometer. Available tests include:

  • Pre- and post-bronchodilator Spirometry
  • Lung volumes
  • Flow-volume loops
  • Airway resistance
  • Diffusion capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO)
  • End-tidal carbon monoxide
  • Pulse oximetry
