Medical Assistant Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, the medical assistant assists nurses, providers and patient navigators to support patient-care related functions. Depending on the specific medical assistant position you apply for, your duties will change slightly. For example, medical assistants applying to work in the GI Lab will differ slightly from medical assistants who apply to work in the Women’s Care Clinic. Ultimately, regardless of which medical assistant job you apply for, you are a critical part of the patient’s journey at Denver Health and are valued as such.


Education

Denver Health does not require that you hold a high school diploma or GED to work as a medical assistant. Our standard medical assistant requirements include the following:

  • It is required that a MA candidate has completed a 160-hour externship or six-months of direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Graduation from an accredited program in Medical Office Assisting or an accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license is a must. 

Required Credentials/Qualifications

Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) from American Heart Association (Required) Certificates, Licenses and Registration.

 

Medical Assistant Training Program

Are you or someone you know interested in becoming a medical assistant (MA)? Applications are open through Nov. 27 for the Denver Health MA training program in partnership with the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement. The program is paid for in full by Denver Health and requires one year of employment at our health care system post program completion. Up to 15 students can participate, and we encourage employees, family members and anyone in the community to apply if interested. Those accepted will start classes in March 2024.
