Denver Health has been designated a Verified Emergency General Surgery hospital by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), making it the only hospital in the Mountain West to hold this distinction.
The verification followed a two-day on-site review and a follow-up documentation process.
The verification process, which began with an on-site assessment in May 2025, evaluated Denver Health across 43 standards spanning nine domains. ACS reviewers examined surgeon response times for hemodynamically unstable patients, quality data tracking systems, and protocols for caring for elderly patients with surgical emergencies. After Denver Health submitted follow-up documentation in January 2026, the ACS confirmed full compliance.
What the Designation Means for Patients and the Region
Emergency general surgery addresses some of the most critical moments in a patient's life, including bowel ischemia, perforated stomach, acute gallbladder crises, and severe soft tissue infections. The Emergency General Surgery Verification Program (EGS-VP) designation is the surgical equivalent of trauma center verification, signaling that Denver Health has the team, systems, and standards to manage these emergencies at the highest level.
As a result of this designation, ambulances will increasingly route their most critical surgical patients to Denver Health. Regional hospitals will rely on Denver Health as a transfer destination for complex cases, and patients seeking emergency care in the Mountain West will find Denver Health among the most qualified options available.
A Hospital-Wide Achievement
The ACS evaluation extended well beyond the operating room. Reviewers assessed how the emergency department handles surgical consults, radiology response times, lab availability, pharmacy resources, ICU protocols, and discharge planning. They also conducted interviews with nurses, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, care navigators, and hospital leadership.
Every role at Denver Health contributed to earning this recognition, from OR support staff and bedside nurses to case managers, laboratory technicians, and administrators.
