The Denver Health Pet Therapy program was started in 2010 with the mission of providing our patients, families, visitors and staff added comfort and companionship. Studies on pet therapy have shown visits with therapy animals can reduce stress, anxiety and pain, lower blood pressure, decrease the feelings of isolation and encourage communication. Our program currently offers visits with therapy dogs and miniature horses and is staffed by our dedicated volunteers and their pets.

Before applying, please make sure you meet the following criteria:

Yes, because of the nature of working in a hospital setting, Denver Health requires Pet Therapy volunteers to be certified by a 3rd party National Organization like Pet Partners or the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. You may submit your volunteer application while your certification is in process but will not be able to volunteer until the certification is complete and you have completed all of the volunteer onboarding steps.

While you can find many resources on Pet Partners or the Alliance of Therapy Dogs websites, some basic qualities that are looked for are:

  • A dog that is at least one year old and has been owned by their handler for at least six months.
  • A dog that is calm and not easily distracted.
  • A dog that easily listens to their handler and knows basic commands.
  • A dog that is comfortable being pet by a variety of people in a variety of settings.
  • A dog that can walk loosely on a lead without pulling.
  • A dog that does not jump on people when interacting.
  • A dog that does not mind strong smells or strange noises.
  • A dog that is clean and well groomed at all times.

For more information, please visit one of the above certifying agencies.

Yes, Denver Health requires a background check specific to DH for all volunteers. The background check will be completed free of charge for all volunteers and will be sent to you as you complete the required steps for onboarding.

There is a one time charge of $20 for the Pet Therapy polo that is a required part of the uniform for all Denver Health Pet Therapy volunteers.

Ready to make a difference at Denver Health? Our dedicated volunteers provide comfort and companionship to patients, families, and visitors, and we thank you for your interest!

Before applying, please make sure you meet the following criteria:

There is a one-time fee of $20 for the polo shirt that is part of the uniform for all Denver Health volunteers.

Depending on the role, this process can take a month or longer to complete. To speed the process, it is helpful to gather your immunization records before your medical screening appointment. It is also helpful to gather the addresses and dates where you have resided and worked for the last 5 years to quickly and easily complete the background screening forms.

Our job shadowing and educational internship programs are managed by our Office of Education.

Our doctors, nurses, care teams and staff change lives for the better every day, but we can’t do it alone! Throughout the year, donations from our community make a huge impact on the people we serve. If you are interested in donating, thank you! We are honored by the compassionate individuals, groups and organizations who choose to support our patients by providing items or financial donations.

Denver Health recognizes the role our health system has in one of the fastest growing public health crisis. We have seen how gun violence affects our patients, our staff and our community.

In recognition of the value of public input when considering policy decisions, the Board has developed the following procedures for receiving public comment at its meetings. Persons who wish to take part in the public comment period should become familiar with and follow these procedures.

Denver Health's eleven-member Board of Directors are appointed by the Mayor of Denver. Board members serve five-year terms and direct Denver Health's activities, which includes financial management; education and quality assurance; and, personnel and compensation.
