New home of trusted healthcare comes to southeast Denver

Dave Johnson walked into Denver Health’s new Southeast Medical Center on opening day and had a visit with his primary care physician. It was only afterward, as he was about to leave, that he noticed something missing.

“The whole time I’ve been here at the clinic, there’s been no anxiety,” Johnson said. “And I just realized that. That’s really awesome.”

The clinic felt bright and fresh, he said, but more importantly, “when you add a staff that is very welcoming, that makes it even brighter.”

Denver Health opened its 11th community health center at 6360 E. Evans Ave., near Monaco Street. The Southeast Medical Center is Denver Health’s first community health center in southeast Denver and its first to offer care to adults only.

Johnson has been a Denver Health patient for more than 20 years. He moved his care to the new clinic to follow Abigail Myers, MD, who had been his doctor at the Federico F. Peña Southwest Family Health Center before being named medical director of the new clinic.

“I value building lifelong relationships with my patients and supporting them through every stage of life’s journey,” Myers said.

Johnson said Myers’ kindness and listening skills stand out.

“It has taken me a long time to find a doctor that I really trust,” he said.

He wasn’t the only patient who followed Myers and was excited to see her on opening day.

Janet Potter, who has been coming to Denver Health for about 40 years, said the decision was easy because it means she can get the same great care closer to home.

“I love the people at Denver Health,” she said. “They’re very friendly, eager to help and just a blessing.”

Initially, the Southeast Medical Center is accepting Denver Health primary care patients, with availability opening to new primary care patients over the summer. It is set to offer 15 specialty care services by the end of this year, and it eventually will house an on-site laboratory, X-ray services and a pharmacy.
