First Robotic Bariatric Surgeries Performed at Denver Health

September 24, 2025

Denver Health bariatric surgeon Sany Thomas, MD, uses joysticks to control robotic arms for bariatric surgery.

The Denver Health Bariatric Surgery Center is excited to offer robotic surgery to its patients using the latest cutting-edge technology. Sany Thomas, MD performed the first robotic surgeries on September 24, with both patients getting Roux en Y gastric bypass procedures.

The Bariatric Surgery Center, which recently received its reaccreditation and operated on its 1000th patient, has been working on bringing the new techniques using robots for the past year. This marks an incredibly proud moment for the team and Denver Health.

"Robotic surgery is more and more becoming the standard of care across the United States for many different forms of surgery including Bariatric surgery," said Alexander Morton, MD, director, Denver Health Bariatric Surgery Center. "The minimally invasive robotic technique provides a decreased level of pain and a faster recovery and allows the surgeon to perform the procedure even in challenging and unexpected circumstances with a level of precision and flexibility that we do not have with traditional minimally invasive techniques."
