Denver Health Expands Breast Imaging Service and Appoints New Chief

Denver Health Radiology is undergoing an ambitious expansion of its breast imaging service line. Breast cancer continues to be the number one most diagnosed cancer in women, and vulnerable populations are at the greatest risk. In Denver, under-insured and uninsured patients have some of the lowest rates of screening and subsequently poor breast cancer outcomes.

Denver Health announced today that Chief Executive Officer Robin Wittenstein has made the decision to retire at the end of August. Denver Health’s Board of Directors has created a six-person Executive Search Committee made up of a diverse group of directors and engaged a nationally recognized executive search firm to work closely with the Board through the process to identify Wittenstein’s successor.

Living Well with Diabetes: 100 Years Later

January of 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old, seriously ill patient with diabetes, receiving the first successful insulin injection. Prior to 1922, diabetes treatment was often limited to following very restrictive or near-starvation diets. The miraculous discovery of insulin by Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best forever changed the course of diabetes treatment and dramatically increased the lifespan for people living with diabetes.

Antibiotic Safety Through Education and Awareness

Denver Health is joining with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to advise patients and their families to use antibiotics only when necessary to further reduce antibiotic resistance, the spread of superbugs and protect from side effects from antibiotics. During U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week and beyond, the CDC promotes "Be Antibiotics Aware," an educational effort to raise awareness about the importance of safe antibiotic use. In 2021, U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week is November 18 – 24.
 

Governor Polis Receives Moderna COVID-19 Booster Vaccine at Denver Health

October 22, 2021

Update November 30, 2021: Booster shots are now available for all individuals 18+ who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least six months after their second dose.

Any individual who received a one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccination, may also receive a booster shot at least two months after their first shot.

Patients may mix and match their booster dose if they wish. However, the FDA and CDC advises that immunocompromised individuals stick to their original series for a booster shot.

Denver Health Celebrates First Anniversary of Sloan's Lake Primary Care Center

Denver Health's newest community health center continues successfully helping patients of all ages receive the primary and specialty care they need, despite opening at a tough time – during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. On October 11, leaders from Denver Health, the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) and the city of Denver gathered at the Sloan's Lake Primary Care Center to celebrate a successful first year treating patients.
