Denver Health welcomes first baby of 2024 with 2,024 diapers

January 1, 2024

DENVER — The labor and delivery team at Denver Health welcomed Juan Carlos Felix Nuñez (Carlos) into the world at 12:40 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2024, making him the first baby to be born at Denver Health in 2024. Adding to the warm welcome, Carlos’s family took home a special gift of 2,024 diapers thanks to Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns in Need program.

Carlos was born healthy to Juan Carlos Felix and Eileen Nuñez Loya, weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring in at 20 inches long at birth.

“We’re so grateful for the care we received at Denver Health, and the diapers are a wonderful extra surprise,” Nuñez Loya said. “I can’t think of a better way to start the new year.”

Nearly one-third of all babies in Denver are born at Denver Health, which means over 300 babies are born at Denver Health per month. To help give these babies and their families extra support at this important milestone, the Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns in Need program sends every baby born at Denver Health home with a “Warm Welcome” bag.

These bags include 18 different essential items a new family may need including diapers, wipes, baby lotion, shampoo, a bib, a burp cloth, hats, socks, clothes, a SleepSack, a stuffed animal, educational material, a book and more.

“Every time a family welcomes a child into the world at Denver Health, we’re happy to celebrate the occasion with the support and resources they need to ensure their child has a healthy start in life with the essentials to grow strong,” Sharon H. Mushkin, Newborns in Need program coordinator, said.

The Newborns in Need program enters its 21st year thanks to generous donors and volunteers who collect thousands of new baby items each year, including car seats, strollers, cribs and more.
