Denver Health Job Shadowing Program

The Denver Health job shadowing program is designed for students ages 16 years or older who are exploring their career options and wishing to learn more about a particular field or position in a healthcare organization. By shadowing someone at Denver Health, you can see someone at work and begin to understand exactly what types of skills are involved in a position and what you can expect on a daily basis. (If you are a high school student interested in a career in healthcare, learn more about our high school internship program MC2.)

  1. Job Shadowing experiences will be approved only for individuals who meet the following requirements:
    1. Currently enrolled in high school, college, or other formal educational program designed for career development or career identification; and
    2. Considering submitting an application for work into health care related fields.
  2. All shadowing individuals must be 14 years of age or older, and there are certain additional age requirements for certain areas of the hospital including the following:
    1. To shadow personnel in the operating room or the intensive care units, the individual must be at least 16 years of age.
    2. To shadow personnel in the Emergency Department, the individual must be at least 18 years of age.
    3. Shadowing is not permitted in the Behavioral Health/psychiatry units and clinics or the Forensic Unit.
  3. This job shadowing procedure does not apply to:
    1. Formal educational experiences. These requests should be directed to the Department of Education for the execution of a Clinical Learning Agreement with the sponsoring school.
    2. Students requesting to complete volunteer work at Denver Health for school credit.
    3. Observation experiences for licensed physicians from the United States or abroad.

Additional Information

Denver Health shall retain the right to refuse permission for any reason to an Observer who has requested a shadowing experience. Observers are not permitted to use or disclose protected health information. The staff member the observer is observing is asked to minimize the amount of protected health information they disclose to the observer. Observers shall not perform any direct patient care. When an observer is in attendance in a clinical situation involving examinations, procedures or treatments, the patient must give consent for the observer to be present. Consent is sought without the observer present so that patient is given every opportunity to refuse. Job Shadowing is limited to a total of 40 hours per year. All hours must be completed within a 2-month time frame for that year.

  1. The following are expected of the Observer during his/her experience:
  2. Obtain a Job Shadow ID badge from HR prior to starting the job shadow experience. HR is located at 660 Bannock Street, 1st floor. This ID badge must be displayed in clear site at all times during the shadow experience and must be returned to the HR department at the end of the experience.
  3. Dress appropriately, in accordance with the Denver Health dress code. Observer should check with the staff being observed to determine appropriate attire.
  4. Contact staff being observed not less than one week before the shadowing to confirm dates, times, and objectives.
  5. Conduct yourself in a professional, courteous, and responsible manner and abide by all Denver Health policies and procedures.
  6. Secure patient’s permission prior to entering a clinical situation involving treatment, procedure, or examination.
  7. Respect patient confidentiality. The observer is not to discuss any patient, his/her medical history, or his/her reason for visiting a physician, with anyone other than the staff member he or she is observing.
  8. Understand that clinical practice involves situations that will require a degree of sensitivity to the needs of the patient and the obligations of the physician.
  9. Understand that the employee is volunteering his/her time to this program and has a demanding schedule.
  10. To not participate in observation if ill, have fever, or cough.
  11. Call the person you will be shadowing in advance if you are ill or an emergency arises and you are unable to be there.
  12. To not provide any direct patient care. Observers may not touch the patient or manipulate any equipment used in patient care.

Expectations of Denver Health Staff Being Observed

All shadowing individuals must be assigned to a specific Denver Health staff member who has agreed to allow the observer to accompany him/her during the designated period of time. This staff member is responsible for personally completing all assigned duties, appropriate supervision of the observer in accordance with this administrative procedure and ensuring patient safety. He/she will also ensure that the observer is free of obvious contagious conditions which may be a risk to patients per Denver Health Policy, "Standard Precautions".
