Addressing Disparities in Breast Cancer Care Among African American Women

Racial disparities in breast cancer survival rates among African-American women has been well-documented over the past 40 years. Early studies largely connected poor survival rates in this group to having a lower economic and social status. We now know, based on evidence, that there are multiple factors causing this issue, ranging from breast cancer prevention efforts to what happens to this group after breast cancer treatment.

Denver Health throws NICU graduate reunion party

Denver Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staff hosted a reunion party Saturday for families who spent time in Denver Health’s NICU. Caregivers and children of all ages joined in the fun and laughter to reunite with the care teams who helped newborns grow strong and supported families along the journey. 

“All of the nurses who saved my son’s life, they deserve to see him,” said Evelyn Usher, whose son, Daecion, was born at 28 weeks and spent two months in the NICU. “They’re a big part of his life, and I just wanted to come here and celebrate them.”

Schedule your COVID and flu shot with MyChart

Patients ages six months and older can now schedule flu and COVID-19 shots through MyChart.

COVID-19 vaccines by Moderna and flu shots are now available at Denver Health. You can schedule a flu or COVID shot by selecting “Schedule an Appointment,” then clicking “Immunizations” in your MyChart.

If you prefer, you may also call the Appointment Center at 303-436-4949 to schedule.

Teen Loves Herself After Bariatric Surgery

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the growing issue of childhood obesity, the health concerns it causes and how it can be prevented. In January of 2024, Denver Health's Bariatric Surgery Center performed the first bariatric surgery on an adolescent-age patient. The now 19-year-old is doing well and reflecting on how she made the big decision to start her weight loss journey when she was just 17.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

We can all help prevent suicide. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time when communities can come together and share their stories and resources to help spread awareness about suicide in the hope of preventing another individual from taking their life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was responsible for 49,476 deaths in 2022, which is about one death every 11 minutes. The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher.
